Ironton was located approximately 11 miles north of Golden Pond. Ironton received its name because it was one of the centers for the shipment of iron ore by way of the Tennessee River.
Originally, Ironton was called Hell's Half Acre. The community received its unusual name thanks to the local iron and timber industries. Weekly, the industry workers would gather in the community and became rowdy once their various shifts were over and most of their liquor drank. Therefore, Hell's Half Acre was slightly noisier than the more innocently named Fungo.
